My name is Angela Schulz. When I started my first chemistry course, like all other beginners I needed to learn about the basic equipment I would be using.

I had no prior experience and initially found it quite difficult to remember the various technical names and descriptions that were coming at me from all sides.

Sure, I had a super-large text book to help me, but slowly memorizing a 600 page technical book wasn’t my idea of fun or efficient learning. I kept thinking:

Sometimes I would remember the name of the equipment but not what it looked like. Other times I’d remember what it looked like, but I couldn’t remember its name. In both cases it was usually a difficult and slow process trying to find the answer I needed.

Over time my experience and knowledge about lab equipment grew. As it did I began to see other people, especially novices with little or no chemistry background, also struggling with the same issues I had encountered.

Not only that, but I saw experienced laboratory personnel struggling to remember the details about equipment that they used infrequently. The answer was obvious.
